We’d like to know your views on our core offer to East Sussex and the public services it would include. The part the county council can play is likely to reduce over the coming years and it’s important to know how residents of East Sussex see the future.

We’re under intense financial pressure because our funding from central Government is falling even though demand for our services is rising. We’ve already made savings of £129 million this decade – money we could have used to care for 5,790 vulnerable adults or to fix 2.5 million potholes.

But we still face a further funding gap of up to £46 million in the next three years and by law we can only spend the money we have. We will have to step back from some of the services that have traditionally been provided.

To help manage this pressure, we think the best approach is to set out what we call a ‘core offer’ for our county and the 540,000 people who live here. This core offer is designed to provide a decent if basic level of service which we think is the least people should be able to expect from us. It enables us to fulfil our legal duties and invest in the county’s economy. It also signals our ambition to be transparent and efficient in everything we do and to work in partnership with the communities we serve.

We believe the core offer represents the best we can provide with the resources we currently have and puts them where they will have the greatest positive impact for the people who need us most. Please do take some time to read the core offer before taking the online survey.

Sussex Police have started the biggest intake of new police officers for over a decade. This has been made possible by the increase in police precept of an average £12 for a band D property, and the PCC releasing £17 million from reserves. It means that over the next four years, Sussex will have 200 more police officers on the front line than it does today.

Although residents are pleased to hear that local policing will be strengthened by these 200 extra officers, they are already indicating that they would like even more. That is why the PCC has opened a survey on her website to gauge potential support for raising more funding locally if the Government lifts the current cap on the police precept.

Temporary road closure

U5992 Slugwash Lane, Wivelsfield

From the West Sussex County Council boundary for a distance of 700 metres southwards From the 26^th November 2018.   The works are anticipated to take twelve days to complete, to allow Hire-A-Lite Ltd on behalf of BT to install duct and cable.

Diversion via:-

U5992 Slugwash Lane – C6 Green Road – B2112 Ditchling Road – Fox Hill (West Sussex County Council) – Rocky Lane (WSCC) -Lewes Road (WSCC), in both directions.

Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Ditchling Road (in the vicinity of the former Royal Oak pub site), from 22nd October – 16th November, while highway works associated with the new housing developments take place.  The traffic lights will be in place between 07:00 & 18:30, with the lights being manually operated during the peak times of 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:30.

The Planning Policy Team at Lewes District Council is pleased to advise that the final round of consultation on the Local Plan Part 2, the Pre-Submission Document, will begin on Monday 24^th September 2018.

When adopted the Local Plan Part 2 will allocate specific sites for development and provide detailed development management policies.   This document is needed to support and help deliver the strategic objectives and spatial strategy of the Lewes District Local Plan Part 1: Joint Core Strategy, adopted in 2016.

Local Plan Part 2 only applies to the area of the district outside the South Downs National Park.

The consultation documents can be viewed on our consultation webpage: www.planningpolicyconsult.lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk  from Monday 24 September and paper copies are available to read at the District Council Offices at Southover House, Southover Road, Lewes, BN7 1AB, and at all local libraries including Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Saltdean and Uckfield.

Due to the recent resignation of our longstanding District Councillor, Cyril Sugarman, Lewes District Council is seeking nominations for a new Ward Councillor, prior to an election being held on Thursday 12th July.  All nomination papers must be with the District Council by 4pm on Friday 15th June.
